Best Budget Golf Rangefinder With Slope Under $100, $200, $300

Golf is one of those sports that is easy to learn but difficult to master. At first, it can take a while to find out how to place your feet and shoulders for a powerful and precise swing.

However, after a bit of practice, most people will be able to hit the ball and make it go in the general direction they want it to.

Once you have learned the basics, the next challenge is improving your accuracy. Being able to hit the ball towards the flag is all very well, but as you get better at your swing, you will also need to learn how to be more precise.

Gauging distance and wind direction is one thing that can be very difficult for beginners. Unfortunately, it is also incredibly important to be able to tell how far away a flag is, so you can choose the right club for hitting the ball without over or under powering your shot.

This is why many golfers who want to take their game to the next level use rangefinders to measure distances and know how far they have to hit the ball.

Rangefinders are telescopic devices that work similar to a monocular with a plethora of inbuilt tech features. They work by looking through the optical lenses and selecting a point in the distance to focus on.

Once you have found your target, the rangefinder will tell you how far away it is. Most of these devices will also take into account hills and other slopes to give as accurate a measurement as possible.

You can then use this information to know what club you should pick and how much force you will need to hit the golf ball across this distance.

Rangefinders vary a lot in price, and you certainly don’t have to spend a lot to get an effective one.

Runner Up: Gogogo Sport Vpro Laser Rangefinder For Golf

Most rangefinders use CR2 batteries, which can be difficult to find in some shops, depending on where you live.

That’s why this model made by Gogogo uses standard AAA cells, which are more widely accessible and convenient.

This unit makes an excellent tool for not just golf but also hunting and other outdoor professions.

Of all the rangefinders we have looked at so far, this one is the best for tournament use, since slope mode can be disabled with a sliding switch on the side.

There is even a red LED under the switch to indicate when the slope function is turned on, so tournament managers will have no trouble telling if you are cheating or not.

With a maximum range of 650yds, this tool is great for most shots, but less suitable for tracking the distance to hazards that are very far away.

The vibration function only works when locking onto flag poles that are within 250yds, or 150yds for the pole itself. As such, you will need to be quite precise when targeting other objects or landmarks.

You can even use this rangefinder for measuring the speed of passing objects as well as distances.

Pros:

  • Uses AAA batteries, which are more accessible than CR2s.
  • Slope mode can be easily switched off for tournaments.
  • Can measure speeds as well as distances.

Cons:

  • Limited maximum range of 650yds.

With the PeakPulse rangefinder, you won’t have any problem getting a clear image of your target thanks to the 6X magnification and fast focus eyepiece.

Runner Up: FineCaddie UPL300

This rangefinder is as stylish as it is functional, with a sleek and ergonomic design that incorporates an outer case wrapped in pu leather.

This makes up most of its maximum 1093yds, and with 6x magnification you will be able to see your target clearly from almost any distance.

A short press of the power button offers general measurements for continuous scanning, while a long press will lock the rangefinder onto a pin or flag.

Most readings will take only 0.1 seconds to be confirmed, and 0.5 seconds for pin lock. When your confirmed distance is ready, you will instantly know thanks to the vibration feedback.

You can switch between slope and non-slope mode, with a red LED to indicate which one you’re currently using.

This makes the UPL300 a great choice for tournaments, since the judges will have no problem knowing for sure you are using a legal rangefinder.

Our Top Pick: Bushnell Golf Tour V5 Rangefinder

We mentioned Bushnell back at the beginning of this article as one of the best manufacturers of high quality laser rangefinders.

Most of their products are very expensive and not suitable for those on a budget. The V5 is the cheapest model in their range, but it is still a formidable piece of equipment that offers all the features you need for improving your stroke.

The slope mode can be selected by pushing the button on the left-hand side forward to reveal a red circle.

This gives a clear indication of when you are using the slope, which should satisfy any tournament manager.

With 6x magnification and a pin seeker function with vibration feedback, this unit provides accurate readings that you can trust.

It can detect flags that are up to 400yds away, which means you can plan your path to the green even when you are still far away.

There is a magnetic strip in the body of the rangefinder for attaching it to your golf cart, so it is always easy to reach.

One thing to bear in mind is that the V5 is not waterproof and should be kept in its carry case during wet weather.

Pros:

  • It is easy to see when slope mode is active for use during tournaments.
  • Crystal clear optics.
  • Flag lock is effective for up to 400yds.
  • Magnetic strip in the body.

Cons:

  • No specified maximum range.

Editors Choice: Precision Pro NX9

The older sibling of the NX7, this rangefinder from Precision Pro is great for taking your golf game to the next level.

It has a slope mode that can be turned off; however, without an LED for indicating which mode you are in, it may be more suitable for practice than tournaments.

It has a maximum range of 600yds, which is pretty short for a rangefinder in this price range, but it makes up for its shortcomings by being very easy to use.

For one, it is water-resistant and will vibrate to confirm you have locked onto your target, whether it is a flag, tree or bunker.

It also sports a rugged, shockproof design that protects it from sudden impacts.

The NX9 has beautiful optics that offer a clear image with brighter resolution and balance of color.

There is a built-in magnet for attaching this unit to your golf cart where you can easily reach it when you need.

With this rangefinder you can measure distances in both yards and meters depending on your preference.

The best part is that when you buy this model you will receive lifetime battery replacement courtesy of Precision Pro.

Pros:

  • Lifetime battery replacement service.
  • Magnetic strip on the side.
  • Pulse vibration activates on any target, not just flags.
  • Water-resistant, and shockproof design to protect the rangefinder from splashes and impacts.

Cons:

  • May be difficult for tournament managers to tell if you are using slope or non-slope more.
  • Limited maximum range of 600yds.

Best Value: Nikon Coolshot 20i GII Golf Laser Slope Rangefinder

Nikon are best known for their cameras, so it is no surprise that they also make some pretty decent rangefinders.

The Coolshot 20i has a maximum range of 800yds with an accuracy of ± 1yd. With Nikon’s signature optics, you will have a crystal clear view of the course that can be focused with a rotating eyepiece.

The continuous scanning mode allows you to hold down the power button and collect measurements for several locations in one sweep. This mode is particularly useful when targeting thin or very small targets.

There is no pulse vibration feature, but you won’t really need it unless you have very shaky hands and struggle to hold the reticle over your target for long enough to get a measurement.

The lenses offer long eye relief, which makes this rangefinder very suitable for those who wear glasses.

With inbuilt first target priority, this unit will always focus on the closest object, so you don’t get measurements for trees or other landmarks in the background.

If you aren’t happy with this product, then Nikon will offer you a replacement or refund as part of their 5-year warranty.

Pros:

  • Great for anyone who wears eyeglasses thanks to long eye relief lens
  • First target priority always locks onto the closest object.
  • Crystal clear optics.
  • 5-year warranty.

Cons:

  • No vibration functions.
  • Difficult to use for those with shaky hands.

The LCD offers great clarity and resolution even in intense sunlight. As you approach the green, this unit will automatically lock on to any flags that are within 450yds.

Runner Up: Nikon COOLSHOT 50i

The Coolshot 50i is very similar to the 20i we looked at earlier, but with a few extra features that make it more suitable for golf.

For one, there is a green LED indicator on the front that signals you are using the device’s actual distance mode. This makes the 50i an ideal piece of equipment for use during tournaments and other official events.

The vibration feature tells you when you have locked onto the flag rather than an object behind it, for accurate measurements when they matter most.

Like the last rangefinder we looked at, this model has a red OLED display that offers great contrast and is very easy to read.

Paired with Nikon’s signature crystal clear optics, this feature means you won’t have any trouble surveying your surroundings and collecting precise distances while you do.

Holding the power button allows you to take continuous measurements for up to 8 seconds, so you can plan your way around the hazards on your course.

Runner Up: Callaway 350TL Laser Golf Rangefinder

Instead of the usual power button we have seen on most models, this rangefinder sports a unique power pad instead.

This means you can turn the device on and off, as well as fire the laser, by simply pressing anywhere on the top of the case.

While it may not sound like much, this actually makes the 350TL much easier to use, since you only need to press the top to start taking accurate measurements.

The red stripe around the eyepiece can be pulled out to activate slope mode. This makes it very clear which mode you are using, so this device is perfectly tournament legal.

You will instantly know when the laser hits the flagpole by the rangefinder, emitting a gentle vibration. Capable of measuring distances of up to 1000yds with an accuracy of ± 1yd, this unit is very reliable.

It has a magnetic strip, so you can mount it to your golf kart when it’s not in use. This will keep your rangefinder safe and secure, although it also makes this product unsuitable for anyone who uses a pacemaker.

Runner Up: MGI Sureshot Pinloc 6000IPSM Golf Laser Rangefinder

Having a rangefinder that vibrates when it locks onto a flag is great, but it can make taking measurements to other landmarks or hazards a bit trickier.

The 6000IPSM will give off a gentle vibration whenever the reticle has settled on any object, which means you always know that you are measuring the correct distance.

Once your target has been acquired, the distance will remain on the screen for 15 seconds, so even those with shaky hands will be able to take note of their readings before they disappear.

There is a slope mode that can be turned off, but no clear indicator of when you are using it. Sadly, this means that some tournament managers may not allow this device, as they will have no way of knowing if you’re cheating or not.

This model sports a great aesthetic with the stylish black and gold color scheme. It also fits very nicely in your hand thanks to its ergonomic design.

You won’t have to worry about losing it, since the powerful magnet in the case allows it to be firmly secures to your golf kart where it will be easily within reach when you need it.

Best Budget Golf Rangefinder With Slope Buying Guide

There are many different types of rangefinder available on the market, each with their own unique features and selling points.

While naturally, you could spend $400+ dollars on a Bushnell, there are lots of other great options for those on a tighter budget.

Here are some of the most important aspects of any good rangefinder.

Optics And Display

For a rangefinder to work, you need to be able to see through it clearly. As such, you will want to choose an option with at least 6x magnification for viewing distant objects.

You also want the optics to be of high quality, providing a crystal clear image that will make it easier to focus in on smaller targets.

This will allow you to take more specific measurements, which is essential if you want to know how much power you should put into your swing.

Along with good optics, the perfect rangefinder should also have a clear and easy to read display.

This refers to the numbers that are superimposed over your image. A good display should be easy to read, even against dark objects like trees or rocks.

It should also be adjustable, with options for seeing the distance in yards and meters, as well as different modes for measuring angles and slope adjusted distances.

Maximum Range

Since you will be using your rangefinder to measure distances, you will want it to have a decent range.

The longest golf drive was 515 yards, not accounting how far the ball rolled after it landed. This means that at minimum, you will want a range finder that has a range of 600yds to cover the maximum distance the ball could travel.

Obviously, you won’t be hitting the ball this far all the time, but even if a lake appears to be well out of range, your ball may still bounce and roll a fair distance after it lands.

A longer range will help you to determine how much leeway you have before encountering hazards like this, which will give you valuable information that will help you determine how much power to put into your swing.

Slope Mode

Slope mode is a great tool for calculating precise distances that take into account hills and other gradients. However, most tournaments will not allow you to use a rangefinder that provides slope adjusted distances.

As such, if you plan on using your device for official events, it will need to have a straight line mode as well as a slope function. More importantly, some tournament managers may still not allow your rangefinder if it doesn’t have a clear indicator of when slope mode is active.

This is because without such an indicator, it would be very easy to cheat by lying about which mode you were using.

With this in mind, if you want to use your rangefinder in tournaments, then buy one that has a clear stripe or LED to indicate when slope mode is turned on.

Flag Locking

Most rangefinders have a feature for locking onto flags and pins. This helps you to measure accurate distances to these markers without accidentally collecting readings for objects in the background.

Another good feature is pulse vibrations technology that causes your device to vibrate when it has locked onto its target.

This lets you know for sure that you are getting the distance between you and the flag, which will give you more confidence in how much power to use in your swing.

Some units will vibrate when they lock onto other items, as well as just flags. This is useful when you need to measure the distance to certain hazards like lakes or trees, which could interrupt the trajectory of your ball.

Protective Features

Naturally, if you buy an expensive rangefinder, you are going to want it to last you a long time. Those who live in areas that experience frequent rain, may want to invest in a unit that is at least slightly waterproof.

You will also want to buy something that is well sealed against dust. If debris gets inside the rangefinder, it may land on the lenses and severely affect the quality of your image.

To protect your rangefinder, you should buy a hard case for storing it in, or select a model that comes with one included in the box.

Frequently Asked Questions about Budget Rangefinders With Slope

How do I use my Rangefinder with shaky hands?

You could always buy a rangefinder with built in optical stabilization technology. This will offer you a clear, stable image, even if your hands can’t stay steady.

Can I use a Rangefinder while wearing glasses?

Yes, most range finders will have adjustable eyepieces that can be used to focus the image. With this, you can adjust the image so that it is perfectly clear, even with your glasses on. Some products like the Nikon Coolshot 20i have long-eye relief lenses.

Hi, my name is Andrew Barrett, and I have been a keen golfer for the last 15 years. As a teenager, I used to attend my local golf club and resort with my father, and I quickly realized that it was the perfect sport for me. From here, I decided to take the sport more seriously, and have been playing regularly with family and friends since.

Over the years, I have picked up many useful skills and tips about golf. I have decided to set up my site, Golf Link, as a way to share my knowledge and tips with other keen golfers. Through this site, I will be talking you through general golfing knowledge, and I will also be reviewing golf clubs and equipment too.
